CRU enables the creation of custom resolutions for both AMD/ATI and NVIDIA GPUs

Michael Ganss

A sophisticated, lightweight tool designed to help users craft custom display resolutions and refresh rates.
Developed by ToastyX, Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) enables the creation of custom resolutions for both AMD/ATI and NVIDIA GPUs by establishing EDID overrides directly in the registry, eliminating the need for .inf files. The utility now supports reading extension blocks from connected monitors with these GPUs, and no longer requires workarounds for NVIDIA issues. CRU automatically inserts a blank extension block in the registry and .inf files when necessary to address NVIDIA driver problems. This utility focuses on adding new monitor resolutions, rather than scaled resolutions. While lower resolutions will be upscaled if GPU scaling is active, higher resolutions are not downscaled and will only function if the monitor supports them. This program is a sophisticated, lightweight tool designed to help users craft custom display resolutions and refresh rates that go beyond what's typically available through the operating system. CRU is especially useful for adjusting timing parameters and refining display settings to maximize both performance and visual quality.

System Requirements

  • Operating System: Compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, or 11.
  • Graphics Processing Unit (GPU): Requires an AMD/ATI or NVIDIA GPU with the correct drivers installed. The Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver is not compatible with EDID overrides.
  • Intel GPU Support: Limited support is available for some Intel GPUs and laptops with switchable graphics. Supported drivers include: For 6th/7th generation (Skylake/Kaby Lake): Intel Graphics Driver for Windows [15.45]. For 4th/5th generation (Haswell/Broadwell): Intel Graphics Driver for Windows [15.40]. For 4th generation (Haswell) operating on Windows 7/8.1: Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 7/8.1 [15.36].
  • Resolutions

Standard resolutions primarily benefit CRT monitors and are also used for incorporating lower resolutions on LCD monitors. It's important not to set the native resolution as a standard resolution. For AMD/ATI graphics, only the resolutions available in the drop-down menu are supported; any other resolutions will be disregarded by the driver and displayed in gray. NVIDIA graphics do not support more than 8 standard resolutions. Standard resolutions are restricted to refresh rates between 60-123 Hz. For additional refresh rates, detailed resolutions should be used.

    Changes in 1.5.2

Support up to 7 extension blocks NVIDIA can now read all extension blocks Detailed resolutions: Added 480p/480i/525p/525i to "Automatic CRT" Fixed "Exact" and "Exact reduced" for interlaced resolutions Added "Exact CRT" timing option Added "Vertical total calculator" timing option Audio formats: added "Auro-Cx" and "MPEG-D USAC" from CTA-861.6 Colorimetry: added "sRGB" and "Default RGB" from CTA-861.6

    Features

Custom Resolutions: This function enables users to establish custom resolutions and refresh rates that go beyond the standard options, enhancing gaming performance or improving productivity in specialized software applications.

Timing Parameters: The utility offers detailed control over timing parameters like horizontal and vertical sync, front and back porch, and pixel clock. Such customization promotes compatibility and enhances the performance capabilities of displays.

Extended Display Identification Data Management: Users can edit the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID), which details a monitor's specifications. Modifying the EDID allows users to overcome default restrictions and access enhanced resolution and refresh rate settings.

Backup Custom Profiles: The tool supports saving and loading custom profiles, facilitating easy transitions between various display settings. This is particularly useful for those using multiple monitors or who need to change display setups frequently.

Hotkeys Support: Hotkeys are integrated to swiftly change resolutions and refresh rates, providing convenience for users to adjust display settings without navigating through menus.

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Can Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) potentially damage my monitor?

No, CRU is engineered to operate within your monitor's specified limits. However, it is important to be careful when adjusting timing parameters beyond what is recommended, as this can lead to unintended effects.

Do all applications and games support the custom resolutions created with CRU?

Most software and games are compatible with custom resolutions. However, there are exceptions where some might not support atypical resolutions effectively. It's wise to check each program's compatibility before implementing substantial adjustments.

Is it possible to revert to the original display settings after using CRU?

Yes, CRU provides the option to return to the default display settings or to toggle between various custom profiles, thus offering an easy way to go back to earlier settings.

    Does CRU accommodate multi-monitor configurations?

Indeed, CRU is capable of handling setups involving multiple monitors, enabling you to assign specific custom resolutions and refresh rates to each display separately.

Is CRU compatible with operating systems other than Windows?

CRU is primarily tailored for Windows. While it might function on alternative platforms via compatibility layers or virtualization, its performance is best on Windows systems.
